Abstract |

|
| This study examined the role of social media in the spread and countering of cyber-extremism from an Islamic jurisprudential and educational perspective among students at Zayed University in the United Arab Emirates. A descriptive quantitative design was employed using a 28-item questionnaire administered to 180 students. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, independent-samples t-tests, one-way ANOVA, and Pearson correlation analysis. The findings showed that X (formerly Twitter), TikTok, and Instagram were the most frequently used social media platforms. Social media was perceived to play a moderate role in the spread of cyber-extremism and a stronger role in countering extremist ideologies through awareness and the promotion of balanced values. No statistically significant differences were found according to gender or duration of social media use, whereas significant age-related differences emerged regarding perceptions of social media’s role in countering cyber-extremism. A weak but statistically significant negative correlation was also found between the two study dimensions. The study highlights the importance of integrating Islamic jurisprudential principles and educational approaches to promote moderation, responsible digital engagement, and resilience against cyber-extremism. It recommends strengthening digital citizenship initiatives and educational programs that reinforce balanced Islamic values among university students. |
