Abstract
In this paper, we present a statistical analysis of linguistic deviations observed in the simultaneous interpretation of Barack Obama’s speech in Cairo. Acknowledging the psychological impact of these deviations on readers, our research investigates the challenges professional interpreters face in achieving accurate message equivalence between English and Arabic. Utilizing a mixed methods approach with descriptive content analysis, we categorize linguistic deviations into three types—semantic, grammatical, and lexical—based on Leech’s Theory (1969). The results indicate that semantic deviations are the most prevalent, followed by lexical and grammatical deviations. Additionally, our analysis highlights a significant correlation between these deviations and the interpreters linguistic proficiency, underscoring the difficulties arising from inadequate interpretation techniques.
